Deepak Yadav, who allegedly shot his daughter, tennis player Radhika Yadav, dead in Gurugram, Haryana, has been sent by a court to a day’s police remand for questioning.
Yadav was produced before a Gurugram court on Friday afternoon, where the cops sought a two-day remand. However, the judge allowed only a day for his interrogation.
Gurugram Police’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sandeep Kumar said on Friday that the 25-year-old tennis player was allegedly shot dead by her father over a disagreement over her tennis academy.
He said Yadav, who runs a rental property business, was unhappy with his daughter running the academy. The reason for his resentment to her work was that he thought it was below their social status given their prosperous financial background.
Elaborating further, Kumar said, “Despite being told not to run the academy, Radhika refused to stop working, which eventually and ultimately led to a huge disagreement. Going further, the accused got angry and shot his daughter with his licensed gun and killed her.”
“The accused has confessed to the murder and clearly stated that the tennis academy disagreement was the sole reason for the murder,” PRO added.
According to the FIR in the case, Deepak Yadav claimed to have been battling depression for the past 15 days due to social criticism of his daughter’s career and earnings.
Going by his confession, he could not bear the humiliation, as mentioned in the FIR.
Yadav, a builder, was arrested from the crime scene on Thursday, while the weapon of offence, his licensed firearm, had also been seized.
The deceased took four bullets shot at her while she was in the kitchen at the residence at around 10.30 am on Thursday morning. She succumbed to the gunshot injuries later.
It was also said that a heated exchange between the father-daughter duo stemmed from a video reel she had uploaded on a social media platform. However, the police dismissed the speculation as a rumour.
The officials privy to the probe say one of the prime angles being examined is the father’s anger over taunts from his peers that he was sustaining himself on his daughter’s income from a tennis academy run by her.
Meanwhile, police sources said that the mother of the deceased refrained from commenting on the incident on the plea that it did not take place in front of her eyes.
The father allegedly resented his daughter’s growing independence and financial success from the academy, the police also said. According to cops, Yadav had asked her to shut the tennis academy. Her refusal to comply with her father’s diktat turned the situation into a bone of contention between the two.
Meanwhile, the cops are working on different angles and the possibilities that could have served as a trigger for her murder at the hands of his father.
