TDP quits NDA, will move no-confidence motion against Centre

PM Narendra Modi and Nara Chandrababu Naidu.

In a major setback for the Narendra Modi government, ally TDP on Friday announced snapping of all ties with the NDA miffed over Centre’s failure to give Andhra Pradesh a special status category.

“TDP decides to quit NDA, decision taken unanimously by party politburo,” an official statement by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) said adding that a formal announcement will be made soon.

This comes a day after Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had said that his TDP was ready to support no-confidence motion against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA government.

As ties between the two sides strained, TDP ministers — Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati and YS Chowdary had last week resigned from the union council of ministers from the Modi government.

With TDP exiting the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), it becomes the first party to leave the coalition since it came to power at the Centre in 2014.

Meanwhile, as TDP pulls out, the total strength of NDA in Lok Sabha will be reduced from the current 327 to 311 as the TDP has 16 MPs in the 545-member lower house of Parliament.

In the 245-member Rajya Sabha, NDA’s strength will come down to 77 from the current 83 as the TDP has 6 members in the upper house.
