The battle for the Tarn Taran Assembly seat bypoll has intensified in Punjab with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Congress not leaving any stone unturned to woo voters.

Sharpening his attack on the Congress, the president of SAD, Sukhbir Singh Badal, said that the 1984 Sikh genocide has not been forgotten by the nation.

“The November 1984 Sikh genocide has not been forgotten by the nation. We have been waiting for justice for 41 years, but justice has not been served yet; instead, Congress rewarded the killers of the Sikh nation with high positions,” said Badal on social media platform X on Friday.

He also pointed guns at the ruling AAP in the state.

“The AAP government is attempting to loot the Punjab treasury by taking stakes in power purchase agreements and selling government lands. Officers who oppose this are being transferred,” he said. “The Shiromani Akali Dal will not allow this loot to happen,” he added.

In the villages of Baghiaari, Kasel, Kasel Harbhanspura, Swargapuri, Jhabal, Jhabal Khaam, Panjwar Khurd, and Jhabal Baghel Singh Wala in Tarn Taran, election rallies were held by Badal, where he made an appeal to vote in favour of SAD candidate Sukhwinder Kaur.

The AAP has fielded Harmeet Singh Sandhu and is hoping to win the seat. Sandhu will take on the Akali Dal’s Sukhwinder Kaur, Congress Karanbir Singh Burj, and the BJP’s Navreet Singh.

The bypoll was necessitated by the death of AAP MLA Kashmir S Sohal, who won the seat in the 2022 elections by a margin of 12,588 votes.

In Punjab, the Tarn Taran is one of the 117 Legislative Assembly constituencies. Polling will take place on November 11, and the counting of votes will take place on November 14.
