US President Donald Trump on Thursday congratulated Taranjit Singh Sandhu on taking charge as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, describing him as a “seasoned diplomat” and underlining his contribution to strengthening ties between India and the United States.
The endorsement from Trump comes at a time when Sandhu’s appointment is being viewed in the backdrop of a broader administrative reshuffle and ongoing efforts to deepen India-US engagement across sectors such as technology and investment.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “Congratulations to Taranjit Sandhu on becoming the new Lt Governor of Delhi! As a seasoned Diplomat and former Ambassador to the United States, he has always shown deep commitment to strengthening the U.S.-India relationship. Wishing him success in leading Delhi’s progress, and furthering global ties!”
Sandhu links ‘Freedom250’ event to future cooperation
Sandhu, who attended the launch of the ‘Freedom250’ celebrations in the national capital marking 250 years of American independence, emphasised the importance of leveraging the occasion to push bilateral collaboration.
He said, “It was a pleasure to meet US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor at the launch of the Freedom250 celebrations in New Delhi. We had a productive conversation on enhancing American investments in Delhi and expanding India-US technology collaboration. The enduring partnership between India and United States remains a key pillar of global progress. I look forward to deeper cooperation that brings tangible benefits to the residents of our National Capital.”
Appointment part of wider administrative reshuffle
Sandhu’s elevation as Delhi LG is part of a wider reshuffle involving Governors and Lieutenant Governors across the country. He has replaced VK Saxena, who has been moved to Ladakh as Lieutenant Governor.
A former Ambassador of India to the United States, Sandhu also contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as a BJP candidate. He took the oath on March 11 in the presence of Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also attending the ceremony.
Sandhu comes from a prominent background as the grandson of noted Sikh leader Teja Singh Samundri.
