Amid uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu, all the newly elected MLAs of the AIADMK have been shifted to neighbouring Puducherry. They have been accomodated in a luxury resort due to fears of possible poaching attempts by rival camps.

This comes as actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, bagging 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. It is currently struggling to secure the numbers required to form the government.

AIADMK bagged 47 seats in the recently concluded polls, while intense political negotiations are going on in the state following the fractured verdict.

Vijay’s party has received support from Congress, taking the overall strength to 112, but they remain short of the crucial majority mark of 118 seats required to stake a claim to power.

Political uncertainty has deepened in Tamil Nadu, since no other major parties have come forward to support TVK.

As per reports, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has not yet invited Vijay to form the government as he lacks the support of 118 MLAs required to demonstrate a clear majority on the floor of the Assembly.

Major players in the state are exploring possible alliances and strategies, while AIADMK is said to have expressed a strong determination to form the government with outside support from the DMK. Notably, AIADMK has reportedly made it clear that the party would extend support to TVK under any circumstances.

It is also being said that a senior functionary associated with a rival camp made aggressive attempts to lure a major section of AIADMK MLAs towards another political front. This is said to be the reason why the party decided to shift its legislators to Puducherry to prevent any possible defections and ensure unity within the party ranks during the crucial phase of negotiations.
