External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met Mongolian President Khaltmaagiin Battulga in Ulaanbaatar on the last day of her two-day visit to the landlocked country.

Swaraj had on Wednesday met the top leaders of the Mongolian government, including Mongolian Prime Minister U Khurelsukh, and discussed issues of bilateral cooperation.

MEA Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said both leaders “discussed cooperation in developmental cooperation, mining, capacity building, IT, films and other areas of bilateral cooperation”.

In separate tweets, Kumar said the two countries agreed to expand cooperation across several sectors as well as between the Parliaments.

At the 6th meeting of the India-Mongolia Joint Committee on Cooperation, both India and Mongolia agreed to support each other in regional and international forums and acknowledged the importance of maintaining the momentum generated through reciprocal high level visits.

Swaraj had also addressed the Indian community and delivered a keynote speech at an event to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of Late Venerable 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche.

Rinpoche served as India’s Ambassador to Mongolia from 1990-2000 and was also a Minister in the State of Jammu-Kashmir.

At birth anniversary celebration, Swaraj recognised Buddhism as “a great connector of civilisations”.

“In our engagement with Mongolia, we are revitalising Buddhism as a strong symbol of our civilisational connection transcending into modern times,” she said.

“In our own small way, we are trying to work with our Mongolian friends to protect & preserve our Buddhist heritage,” Swaraj added.

Not only is this Swaraj’s maiden visit to Mongolia, it is also the first by an Indian EAM in 42 years.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Mongolia in May 2015.
