Suspected terrorists opened fire at an army camp in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bari Brahmana area in the early hours of Sunday triggering a gunfight with security forces who foiled the attack.

A search operation was launched immediately after two suspected terrorists fired at the Sentry post of the Ratnuchak Military Station on the outskirts of Jammu.

They were spotted by the Sentry on duty around 1.50 am. When challenged, the suspected terrorists opened fire prompting retaliation by the personnel on guard duty.

“The suspects were challenged but they did not stop, thereafter warning shots were fired by the Sentry. The suspects fired back and rushed out of the sight,” said Lt Colonel Devender Anand, the Defence Ministry spokesman.

No one was injured in the brief exchange of firing, the sources said, adding the suspected ultras fled the scene under the cover of darkness.

The entire area bordering Samba district was sealed and a search operation is underway to track down the fleeing suspects.

The area was being scanned by IAF helicopters and drones as there were inputs that the terrorists might strike ahead of the Republic Day.

The incident comes less than a day after security forces gunned down four Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists in Pulwama in a major operation. One of the terrorists was a Pakistani; the other three were locals.

On the same day the Army thwarted a terrorist strike in Jammu by unearthing a cache of arms and ammunition in the Billawar block of Kathua.

Based on inputs from Military Intelligence, a joint operation by Army Brigade at Samba and J-K Police was launched at Galak in Billawar. Warlike stores including one AK-47 assault rifle, one AK-56 assault rifle, one hand grenade, four magazines, 256 rounds of AK ammunition and 59 rounds of sniper ammunition were recovered.

This is not the first time that terrorists attempted to attack an Army camp.

In February this year, four JeM terrorists had targeted the Army camp in Sunjuwan killing 11 security force personnel and one civilian. The incident left 20 other injured. All four terrorists were gunned down.
