The Haryana Police detained Suraj Pal Amu and sent him to preventive custody on Thursday, 25 January, as protests against ‘Padmaavat’ continued to rage across many states.

Amu was taken into custody to prevent him from issuing instigating statements in the light of the violence.

According to Indian Express, he has been put under house arrest. Republic TV reports that the police will later decide whether to make a formal arrest.

“Amu has been taken under preventive custody. He will be produced or action will be taken accordingly,” India Today quotes Kuldeep Singh, DCP, East Gurgaon, as saying.

In November 2017 he had allegedly announced a bounty of Rs 10 crore on Deepika Padukone’s head. Amu was BJP’s state media coordinator at the time. Following his comment on Padukone, Amu had to resign from his post.

He had threatened to continue his protest against ‘Padmaavat’ after the Supreme Court imposed a stay on the bans on the film in various states.

When asked to comment on the 24 January attack on a school bus in Gurgaon by fringe elements, Amu called for peaceful protests adding that “we wouldn’t have been able to forgive ourselves had a child got injured”.

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali magnum opus, which released on Thursday, has been embroiled into controversy since its inception.
