Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday changed his display picture on X to ‘Operation Sindoor’, marking one year of the military operation launched after the Pahalgam terror attack and paying tribute to the valour of the Indian armed forces.

Several senior Union Ministers also joined the digital tribute through the day, updating their profile pictures with the commemorative Operation Sindoor image as the government marked the anniversary of India’s cross-border military response.

The Prime Minister later posted on X: “A year ago, our armed forces displayed unparalleled courage, precision and resolve during Operation Sindoor. They gave a fitting response to those who dared to attack innocent Indians at Pahalgam.”

“The entire nation salutes our forces for their valour,” he added.

PM Modi said the operation reflected India’s “firm response against terrorism” and showcased the “professionalism, preparedness and coordinated strength” of the armed forces.

“Today, a year later, we remain as steadfast as ever in our resolve to defeat terrorism and destroy its enabling ecosystem,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Union Ministers join tribute on Operation Sindoor anniversary

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal were among the Union Ministers who also updated their social media display pictures to the Operation Sindoor graphic.

The Indian Army, marking the anniversary, described the operation as “India’s resolute response”.

“Justice served. Jai Hind,” the Army posted on social media.

The Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff also called Operation Sindoor a “symbol of national resolve”.

The Army released a video recalling the events leading up to the operation and the planning behind the strikes on terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The video also featured Prime Minister Modi’s remarks made after the Pahalgam terror attack, where he had said: “India will identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers.”

Another statement from the Prime Minister featured in the video underlined India’s diplomatic position after the attack.

“Terror and talk cannot go together. Terror and trade cannot go hand in hand. Water and blood will not flow together,” Modi had said.

What was Operation Sindoor?

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7, 2025, after the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. The Resistance Front, an offshoot of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Indian armed forces carried out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, targeting facilities linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad and Hizbul Mujahideen.

Nine major terror launchpads were destroyed during the operation, and more than 100 terrorists were killed, according to the inputs.

Pakistan responded with drone attacks and shelling, leading to a four-day military confrontation between the two countries. India later carried out retaliatory strikes that destroyed radar installations in Lahore and facilities near Gujranwala.

A ceasefire was eventually agreed upon on May 10 after Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations reached out to the Indian DGMO.

Rajnath Singh says Operation Sindoor showed India’s preparedness

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to the armed forces on the anniversary of the operation, calling it a “powerful symbol of national resolve and preparedness”.

“On the anniversary of Operation Sindoor, we salute the valour and sacrifices of our armed forces, whose courage and dedication continue to safeguard the nation,” Singh wrote on X.

He said the operation reflected “unmatched precision, seamless jointness and deep synergy across services”.

“Operation Sindoor stands testament to India’s steady advance towards achieving Atmanirbharta, enhancing capability while reinforcing resilience,” he added.
