The alertness of a station master, posted at Bhangala station in the Jammu division of Northern Railway, averted a potential rail mishap early Friday morning.
According to official reports, the incident occurred around 3:25 a.m. on 10 October when an empty NMG freight train was passing through Bhangala station. Station Master Vijay Kumar noticed smoke and sparks emanating from the wheel of the 15th wagon of the train. Reacting swiftly, he signalled the train manager with a red indication, prompting the train to halt after crossing the advance signal at kilometre 81/2 between Bhangala and Mukerian in Punjab.
With assistance from the gateman at Level Crossing Gate No: 120, the affected coach was thoroughly checked. The technical fault was rectified, and the sparks were extinguished, preventing what could have been a serious accident. The freight train later resumed its journey safely.
Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Jammu, Vivek Kumar, lauded the station master’s prompt action and presence of mind, announcing that he would be formally honoured for his exemplary service.
The incident stands as a shining example of the vigilance, dedication, and professionalism displayed by Indian Railways personnel, an official spokesman added.
