A novel scheme to support the uninterrupted education of children — either orphaned or with a physically-challenged single parent — christened ‘Anbu Karankal’ (Arms of Love), was formally launched by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin in Chennai on Monday.

In the first phase, 6,082 children have been identified to be eligible under this scheme. They would get Rs 2000 deposited directly into their bank account till they attain the age of 18. For their further studies and for skill development, the state government will take necessary steps.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said, “The scheme has been designed to extend support not only to children who have lost both their parents but also those with a single parent who are either disabled or indisposed or even languishing in prison. Till they attain 18 years of age, the government would deposit Rs 2000 every month into their bank account. After completing schooling, support will be extended for their college education or skill development.” The Chief Minister also distributed scholarships and laptops to the beneficiaries.

“Implemented as part of the ‘Thayumanavar’ (Becoming mother) programme, this is not vote-bank politics, but born of the commitment to empower and uplift the marginalised and the hand that does that should be mine,” he said and listed the various programmes being implemented for the development of school students, including the morning breakfast scheme in primary schools across the state, Financial relief of Rs 511.27 crore to 15,775 children who lost their parents during the corona lockdown and self defence training for girls staying at Government Homes. The beneficiaries were identified by the District Collectors, he added.

“Seeing the divine in the smile of the poor,” was the slogan of Dravidian icon and DMK founder ‘Anna’ CN Annadurai, the Chief Minister recalled and said it remains the guiding spirit of his Dravidian Model of Governance. He also wished the beneficiaries to become doctors, engineers, and professionals in various fields, including politics.
