Security agencies and local police have uncovered a suspected espionage network in Punjab’s Pathankot district, leading to the arrest of one accused allegedly involved in sharing sensitive information related to the Indian Army and paramilitary forces with Pakistan-based handlers.
According to police, Sujanpur police station registered a case against four persons under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Official Secrets Act, 1923, following intelligence inputs about suspicious activities along the Pathankot-Jammu National Highway (NH-44).
Investigators said the accused had allegedly installed CCTV cameras at shops located between bridge numbers 4 and 5 near Sujanpur to monitor the movement of Indian Army and paramilitary convoys passing through the route. The surveillance footage and live video feed were reportedly being transmitted electronically to handlers based in Pakistan and other foreign operatives.
Police described the alleged activities as a serious threat to India’s sovereignty, integrity, and national security.
Acting on confidential inputs, police conducted a raid and arrested Baljit Singh alias Bittu in connection with the case. The other accused named in the FIR has been identified as Vikramjit Singh alias Vikka, a resident of Nawa Pind in Sujanpur, Balwinder Singh alias Vicky, and Taranpreet Singh alias Tannu.
Police said the accused were allegedly involved in criminal and anti-national activities. A case has been registered under Sections 61, 111, 113(3), and 152 of the BNS along with Section 3 of the Official Secrets Act.
Officials said further investigation is underway to trace the cross-border links of the network and identify the source of funding behind the alleged espionage activities. A detailed report has also been sent to senior authorities and the area magistrate.
