A shocking incident occurred on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway in Ghaziabad on Friday evening when a speeding car mowed down a traffic constable on duty. The victim, 31-year-old Constable Vipin Kumar, succumbed to his injuries 34 hours later, early Sunday morning.
The horrifying moment was captured on CCTV, which shows a white Maruti Ertiga suddenly veering across lanes at high speed and hitting the constable who was standing on the roadside.
The impact was so severe that Vipin was launched nearly 10 feet into the air and landed almost 100 meters away from the point of collision. A passerby witnessed the incident and immediately alerted the police.
Vipin Kumar, a resident of Vimalnagar in Khurja, Bulandshahr, was posted in the Ghaziabad Traffic Police. On August 22, at around 6 PM, he was managing traffic near Vijaynagar on the expressway when the speeding car hit him, and the driver fled the scene.
Vipin was rushed to Manipal Hospital in a critical condition. Despite efforts by the medical team, he died at approximately 3:45 AM on Sunday after battling for over a day.
Additional DCP Traffic, Sachchidanand, confirmed that the vehicle was moving at around 130 km/h at the time of the accident. The driver crossed multiple lanes before striking the constable. The accused, identified as Vineet, has been taken into custody.
During questioning, Vineet revealed that the car was registered in his brother Sumit’s name. It had been newly purchased on August 13.
Vipin’s brother, Akshay Kumar, who is also a constable in the Ghaziabad Traffic Police, alleged that the act was intentional. “The driver deliberately ran over my brother with the intention to kill him,” he said.
The FIR lodged mentioned this intent, and also stated that Vineet was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Investigations have revealed that Vineet was a known history-sheeter with six previous cases, including assault and theft. His father and uncle are also listed as history-sheeters at the same police station. Both Vineet and his brother Sumit have now been arrested.
Vipin Kumar joined the Uttar Pradesh Police in 2016. He is survived by his wife and three children — 8-year-old twins (a boy and a girl), and a 5-year-old son.
