Uttar Pradesh will undergo a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls from Tuesday along with 11 other states and Union Territories, on the lines of the one conducted in Bihar.
According to ECI sources here on Monday, the voter list at every booth in all 403 assembly seats in the state will be thoroughly examined from tomorrow.
“Every voter will be re-verified. Training has already been conducted in Uttar Pradesh following the Election Commission’s directive,” the sources said.
The voter list will be frozen starting at 12 midnight tonight. After this, Booth Level Offices (BLOs) will go door-to-door distributing forms. BLOs will visit each house three times, as per the directives of the ECI.
There are over 153.5 million voters in Uttar Pradesh and a total of 1,62,462 polling stations in the state. Training has been conducted for the Collector, SDM, ADM, Tehsildar, and other officials involved in updating the voter list, including BLOs.
Sources said the voter list at every booth will be scrutinized. Documents will be demanded from suspicious individuals. In many places, the names of a large number of people will be removed from the voter list.
The Election Commission has conducted SIR eight times so far. The last SIR was conducted in 2003-04. On average, SIR of voter lists is conducted once every 22 years. During SIR, every person on the voter list is thoroughly checked to ensure that no one is a fake voter and that their name is not listed at more than one place.
The 2003-04 list will be compared to determine where one’s family members were at that time. Those whose names do not match will be issued notices and asked for documents.
Only 11 documents will be valid in UP.
