Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Friday projected Jharkhand as a national centre of tribal identity and empowerment while addressing tribal representatives from more than 10 states at the Chief Minister’s residential complex in Ranchi.

The gathering, which drew delegates from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Assam, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Manipur, marked one of the largest recent interstate tribal interactions hosted in the state.

Soren welcomed the delegates and said the soil of Jharkhand has always carried the strength of courage, dignity and struggle. He invoked the legacy of Birsa Munda and Shibu Soren to underline the state’s historic role in shaping tribal consciousness across the country.

A major thrust of his address was the state’s growing education initiatives for tribal communities. He highlighted that Jharkhand has become the first state in India to sponsor foreign higher education for tribal students at government expense. According to him, this model has already created new aspirations among young people and placed the state on the map for institutional support to tribal talent.

The Chief Minister also spoke at length on environmental concerns, linking them to tribal life and identity. He said the community has always considered nature sacred and warned that disruptions caused by unbalanced development have intensified floods, droughts and landslides in the region. He called environmental stability a shared responsibility and stressed that tribal worldviews offer guidance at a time of ecological stress.

At a broader political level, Soren framed tribal unity as essential to gaining visibility in national discourse. He said the coming months will require organised mobilisation so that issues faced by tribal communities do not remain isolated demands but become part of national policy agendas. He added that he will personally take part in outreach programmes across India to strengthen these efforts.

The event also served as a platform to reinforce political capital within Jharkhand. With representatives praising the state government’s welfare measures, the gathering projected Soren as a leader capable of shaping a wider tribal constituency beyond state borders. Delegates said Jharkhand’s initiatives have brought renewed energy among tribal communities across India.

Tributes were paid to Shibu Soren for his decades of work in tribal movements, adding a legacy note to the event.
