An Army soldier was martyred and a terrorist gunned down in an encounter on Tuesday in the Ratnipura area of Pulwama district of South Kashmir.

The martyred soldier has been identified as Havaldar Baljeet Singh, who suffered grievous injuries during the encounter and was rushed to the military hospital where he succumbed. Another injured soldier was undergoing treatment at the time of writing.

The slain terrorist was identified as Hilal Ahmad of Hizbul Mujahideen. He was reportedly instrumental in the escape of Pakistani terrorist Naved Jatt from police custody in Srinagar’s medical college hospital last year.

Clashes erupted at the encounter spot early in the morning after stone pelters tried to help the trapped terrorist escape. Police fired teargas shells to disperse the miscreants.

The security forces, including Army, CRPF and police, had cordoned the area following credible reports about presence of terrorists. During the searches, the security forces were fired upon by the terrorists. The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight.

Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter.

It is being suspected that at least two terrorists might have escaped the cordon taking advantage of darkness. The house in which the terrorists were hiding got destroyed during the encounter.
