A jawan and a civilian were killed on Monday when terrorists attacked an Army camp at Kakapura in the Pulwama district of South Kashmir.

This is the first deadly attack at an Army camp after the announcement of unilateral ceasefire on 16 May by the Centre during the holy month of Ramzan. The killed civilian has been identified as Bilal Ahmad Ganai, a taxi driver, who was injured in the crossfire and died while being rushed to the hospital.

Police said the terrorists attacked the camp of 50 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) at Kakapura and a Sepoy Vikram Singh was seriously injured. He succumbed to the injuries at the military hospital early in the morning.

The authorities have clamped prohibitory orders in parts of Pulwama district.

Army spokesman, Colonel Rajesh Kalia, said, “In a cowardly and provocative act of terror, terrorists carried out a stand-off attack on Kakapura Army Camp. One soldier martyred. Retaliatory actions ongoing.”

Reports said that hundreds of people gathered as the body of Bilal was lifted towards a ground where his funeral prayer was offered. Women and children showered toffees and flowers on Bilal’s body.

Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed in Pulwama district following the killing of the civilian. Internet and train services were suspended as a precautionary measure.
