Two farmers were mauled by sloth bears in two separate incidents in Sayara range of the Gogunda sub division of the district.

According to police and villagers, a group of three bears attacked and mauled a farmer in tribal dominated region Sayara range of the Gogunda sub division in this district early Sunday morning.

A victim, Pema Ram Gameti of Notal-Ki-Bhagal village, was on his way to his field on Sunday morning when a group of three bears attacked and mauled him badly. Another farmer in the vicinity, Bhairon Lal Suthar raised an alarm to repel the animals and call villagers for help. Pemaram was rushed to nearby Gogunda Hospital from where he was referred to the Udaipur Hospital.

On the past Friday-Saturday night too, a similar incident was reported from a nearby village Royda where the group of three bears mauled a farmer Prem Singh Rajput who was also referred to Udaipur for treatment.

This tribal dominated stretch, is in the neighbourhood of the Kumbhalgarh sanctuary from where the wildlife — sloth bears, leopards and wolves — frequently stray into populated villages.

Forest Officer Bharat Meghwal has advised villagers for not venturing out solitarily to their farms and the forests at least for the time-being.
