Uttar Pradesh Samajwadi Party president Shivpal Yadav met Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Ajit Singh to discuss an electoral alliance that may keep the Bharatiya Janata Party away from forming the next government in the state.
Sources said that Ajit Singh accepted an invitation to attend SP's silver jubilee celebration on November 5.
Shivpal Yadav has been in the national capital since Wednesday evening.
His mission, it is understood, is to win allies for the coming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
Political observers believe that the Samajwadi Party has lost considerable ground since 2012.
The recent squabbling between the state party president and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav only made matters worse.
On the day of arrival he called on Janata Dal (United) leader KC Tyagi.
The JD(U) had earlier claimed it would contest state elections in some eastern districtson its own with prohibition being its main plank.
However, on Friday the party indicated that it might join the secular alliance in UP.
