A Hisar court in Haryana on Tuesday sentenced self-styled godman Rampal to life imprisonment in connection with a 2014 murder case.

Head of Satlok Ashram, Rampal was found guilty in the two cases of murder on 11 October. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ) DR Chalia pronounced the verdict in the 2014 case. The court will pronounce its verdict in the second case on Wednesday.

Ahead of the court’s decision on last Thursday, the police had imposed Section 144 in Hisar to prevent disruption of law and order.

The first case, in which Rampal has been found guilty, relates to the death of a woman at Rampal’s Satlok Ashram, spread over 12 acres of land near Barwala town of Hisar district. The second murder case is about the death of four women and a child near the same ashram during clashes between his supporters and security forces when the police had come to arrest Rampal in November 2014 following orders of Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The godman was arrested on November 19, 2014 after a two-week stand-off between his followers and the police. He was arrested on charges of murder, attempt to murder, conspiracy, holding illegal weapons and abetting suicide.
