Security has been intensified across Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Independence Day, amid intelligence inputs regarding the movement of Pakistan-backed terrorists in the hilly regions of the Union Territory.

Terrorists have reportedly intensified attempts to infiltrate through the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) with Pakistan.

The Indian Army and the Border Security Force (BSF) have successfully foiled such infiltration attempts and, in recent days, recovered arms and ammunition from terrorist hideouts along the borders.

Security forces are maintaining strict vigilance on suspected anti-national elements in the run-up to Independence Day. Reports also indicate that special security measures are being implemented around major temples and financial institutions.

J&K Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat and senior officers of the Indian Army are personally monitoring the situation.

Lt General PK Mishra, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the White Knight Corps, along with the GOC of the Ace of Spades Division, conducted a forward area review of the Poonch Brigade today. He was briefed on the current situation, threat assessment, and the operational posture of the forces.

At least two terrorists reportedly attempted to infiltrate the Poonch sector on 30 July. Indian troops opened fire upon spotting them near the border fence.

Last week, the BSF apprehended a suspect near the Indo-Pakistan border in Kathua. During interrogation, it was discovered that his mobile phone had been used to make at least three WhatsApp calls to Pakistan.

Notably, a 4-minute call to a Pakistani number on 17 August 2024 was also traced. The suspect is currently being questioned by security agencies.

A group of highly trained Pakistani terrorists has been evading security cordons following brief encounters with security forces in the higher reaches of Udhampur, Doda, and Kishtwar districts. Operations to neutralize them are ongoing, with efforts reportedly underway to track them down.

In a recent encounter on the outskirts of Srinagar, security forces neutralized three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 innocent civilians were massacred.

Another encounter has been ongoing for the past six days in the Akhal area of Kulgam district in South Kashmir.

On Monday, the DGP chaired a security review meeting in Srinagar, where senior police officers briefed him on the overall security scenario.

Officials from the intelligence wing also shared their assessments and updates. The meeting focused on recent security developments and current challenges, as well as measures to effectively address them.

The DGP directed officers to intensify surveillance on anti-national elements and enhance area domination in their respective jurisdictions.

In a joint three-day search operation by the Army, BSF, and J&K Police in the Kalaroos area of Kupwara district in North Kashmir, a cache of arms and ammunition including 12 Chinese grenades and one pistol was recovered.
