Security forces in J&K were put on alert after there were reports that militants in large numbers had infiltrated into the Valley from across the Line of Control.

According to officials, over 20 militants crossed over to this side from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) recently.

Another group of about 15 Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) terrorists had been making attempts to infiltrate through the Line of Control (LoC) under the cover of firing by Pakistan troops but their efforts were thwarted by alert jawans of the Indian Army. Four HM terrorists were recently killed on the LoC when they tried to infiltrate.

However, the group of JeM terrorists is learnt to have recently sneaked into the valley. The HM and JeM were trying to infiltrate trained terrorists through the LoC and the International Border with active support of the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Rangers.

They said most of the militants were believed to be affiliated to the Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit headed by Maulana Masood Azhar.

The security grid is apprehending a spike in militant attacks in the state, particularly in Kashmir, the officials said.

The security forces have been asked to remain on high alert and maintain vigil around sensitive security installations across the state, they said.

The officials said it was rare for such a large number of militants to infiltrate in one go and indicated the desperation of their handlers across the LoC to keep the Kashmir pot boiling.
