SC raps govt on exploitation of national anthem

The Supreme Court on Friday sought response from the government on a petition seeking a ban on dramatisation commercial exploitation or misuse of the national anthem.

A bench comprising of justices Dipak Misra and Amita Roy was hearing a petition filed by one Shyam Naryan Chouskey. The petitioner claimed that the anthem was being played in variety shows to add drama and that not only was an insult to the anthem but was also an violation of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act 1971.

He suggested that there should be no commercial exploitation of the national anthem nor should it be allowed to be dramatised.
