Saharanpur SSP, DM removed for failing to put brakes on caste clashes

A day after a Dalit’s death in fresh caste clashes in Saharanpur, the Uttar Pradesh government removed SSP Subhash Chandra Dubey and District Magistrate NP Singh. The government took the ground that the officers failed to control the violence between the Dalits and Thakurs.

A Dalit, Ashish ​of Suankheri village in Sarsawa area of the district, succumbed to bullet injuries when unidentified miscreants attacked a group he was part of near Ambheta Chandpur village when they were returning after attending Mayawati’s rally. Ten others were injured in the incident.

The death sparked off tension in the nearby villages and police started a search operation and arrested more than 24 suspects.

A compensation of Rs. 15 lakh was announced for the family of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for each of the injured, District Magistrate NP Singh said.

The top officials from Meerut and Lucknow, including Secretary (Home), ADG (Law and Order), Meerut ADG are camping in Saharanpur to monitor the situation.

In retaliation, Dalits protested in the adjoining Badagaon and Nanauta villages where they damaged a few shops, leading to closure of markets in both the towns.

During her visit BSP Chief Mayawati had appealed people of all the castes and communities to maintain peace and harmony. She had also met victims of the 5 May clashes.
