Congress president Rahul Gandhi broke his silence on the controversy generated by a scene in the critically acclaimed Netflix drama ‘Sacred Games’ on Saturday.

In a comment posted on Twitter, the 48-year-old Gandhi said that popular series cannot change the image of his father referring to show’s alleged depiction of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in poor light.

Reacting to multiple complaints against the show over the portrayal of Rajiv Gandhi, the Congress president said, “BJP/RSS believe the freedom of expression must be policed & controlled. I believe this freedom is a fundamental democratic right.”

“My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that. #SacredGames,” he added.

‘Sacred Games’, starring Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte in leading roles, is under fire from some Congress supporters for “tarnishing” the image of Rajiv Gandhi.

Complaints have been filed against the show, its producers and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

On Tuesday, a Congress activist in West Bengal filed a police complaint against actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, over-the-top media services provider Netflix, and the makers of “Sacred Games” for “insulting and abusing” Rajiv Gandhi.

The complainant said that the show had a scene in which Siddiqui, playing the protagonist, is seen and heard “abusing Rajiv Gandhi, calling him ‘fattu’, which was shown as pu*** in the subtitles”.

A plea filed in Delhi on Wednesday sought the removal of two contents that allegedly depicts historical events like the Bofors and Shah Bano cases, the Babri Masjid case and the communal riots incorrectly.

In another plea, the President of Youth Indian National Trade Union Congress’ (INTUC) and All Indian Cine Worker’s Association (AICWA) in Mumbai lodged a complaint against the channel, Siddiqui and makers of the show for insulting the late Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi.
