Ruckus in Odisha Assembly over 2 rape incidents

Odisha Assembly

Two recent incidents in which minor girls were raped in the state rocked the Odisha Assembly on Monday with the Congress stalling proceedings demanding suspension of the question hour for a discussion.

The ruckus forced Speaker Pradip Amat to adjourn the House.

Leader of the Opposition Narasingha Mishra said he had given notice for discussion, which ought to be taken up since the nation was outraged over such incidents in J&K and UP.

“Unfortunately, the national media does not take notice of similar ghastly crime in Odisha,” he remarked while pointing out at the “stoic silence” of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

A minor was brutalised in Niligiri and another at Soro. “The incidence of rape has increased alarmingly. Six girls are raped every day while the conviction rate is six per year,” Mishra said.

He cited an alleged instance of a police officer raping a woman constable and said the policeman was later promoted to the rank of sub-divisional police officer. “The stoic silence of the CM and inaction has encouraged perpetrators of such crime,” Mishra said.

Speaker Pradip Amat said he had received the notice and would examine it.

The Congress members protested and raised slogans against the government, and the House was adjourned without transacting any business.
