Rajasthan Royals will be aiming to quickly regroup and return to winning ways when they face a struggling Kolkata Knight Riders in an afternoon clash on Sunday, with the two teams entering the contest on contrasting trajectories this season.
Placed third on the IPL points table, Rajasthan Royals, who had built strong momentum with four consecutive wins, saw their run halted in their previous outing against Sunrisers Hyderabad. While that defeat exposed some vulnerabilities, particularly in their top order, the team remains one of the more settled and balanced units in the competition and will be keen to reassert that dominance.
In contrast, three-time champions KKR have endured a difficult campaign so far. Under captain Ajinkya Rahane and head coach Abhishek Nayar, the side is yet to register a win after six outings, with their only point coming from a rain-affected fixture against Punjab Kings. A lack of confidence and inability to close out games from promising positions have defined their season so far.
KKR’s campaign has also been hampered by injuries to key pacers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, while Matheesha Pathirana is yet to join the squad. These setbacks have weakened their bowling attack, but tactical decisions on the field have equally drawn scrutiny.
The management’s handling of Varun Chakravarthy has been a talking point. Initially used in the powerplay, the spinner struggled for control and confidence, conceding heavily before eventually finding some rhythm and picking up key wickets, including those of Jos Buttler and Washington Sundar.
Selection decisions have also raised questions, with players like Tim Seifert and Rachin Ravindra not being utilised consistently, while several domestic options remain on the sidelines. Despite a support staff featuring experienced names like Shane Watson, Tim Southee and Dwayne Bravo, KKR have struggled to find clarity in their approach.
There have been some positives, though, with Chakravarthy returning to form and Cameron Green showing signs of resurgence with a well-made 79. The spin unit, particularly in afternoon conditions, could still play a decisive role if it can apply sustained pressure.
Rajasthan Royals, meanwhile, will be looking for a stronger showing from their top order after a collective failure in the previous match, where Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Dhruv Jurel, Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Riyan Parag all fell cheaply. The team has arrived early to acclimatise and will be focused on tightening its batting performance.
With a break in the schedule approaching due to upcoming Assembly elections, Kolkata Knight Riders will be particularly eager to secure their first win at home before a long gap between fixtures at Eden Gardens.
Historically, the contest between the two sides has been closely fought, with KKR holding a slight edge. However, based on current form, Rajasthan Royals will enter the match with greater confidence, while KKR will be desperate to turn their season around.
The pitch at Eden Gardens, traditionally on the slower side, has evolved into a more batting-friendly surface in recent years. It offers good bounce for pacers and some assistance for spinners, and with a quick outfield, another high-scoring encounter could be on the cards.
