Rishi Diwakar, son of late Ram Lakhan Dhobi, a former MLA from Etawah’s Lakhna assembly constituency, quit the BJP and joined the Congress on Wednesday, along with dozens of supporters.
State Congress President Ajay Rai provided him with party membership at a function held at the state Congress headquarters.
Welcoming the new members, Ajay Rai said that people from various districts are continuously joining the party, influenced by its policies and ideology, thereby strengthening the organisation.
Targeting the BJP, he alleged that the party garnered votes in the name of Lord Ram, but serious irregularities have occurred in matters related to donations, land purchases, and offerings associated with the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
He said the public has now understood the truth about the BJP and that the Congress will work to oust it from power.
According to State Congress spokesperson Dr Uma Shankar Pandey, those who joined the party included along with Rishi Diwakar included Lakhna Nagar Panchayat councillor Bunty alias Firoz, Janu Tiwari, Pankaj Yadav, Ashok Dohre, Mohammad Tasleem, Avneesh Tripathi, Vivek Tiwari, Parwar Warsi, Rambabu Tripathi, Shivratan Diwakar, Sadhna Savita, Sanju Chauhan, Palak, Vanshika Chauhan, Satya Prakash Shukla, Sanjeev Tripathi, and Harendra Tripathi, besides dozens of supporters.
Etawah District Congress President Ashutosh Dixit, outgoing State Congress Vice President Vishwavijay Singh, former Banda District President Pradyumna Dubey, and other Congress leaders were present at the programme.
