Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday accused the Congress and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc of attempting to block women’s reservation, saying India “will not tolerate the insult to Nari Shakti” and warning that the people will respond to any such move, as the BJP staged a protest inside the Delhi Assembly during a special session on the issue.

The remarks came amid a renewed political face-off over the implementation of the women’s reservation law, with the BJP stepping up its attack on opposition parties after the Women’s Reservation Bill failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, framing it as a test of commitment to women’s political representation.

In a post on X, Gupta said a “conspiracy” had been hatched by the Congress and its allies to stall the reservation for women in legislatures. She said BJP MLAs held a protest within the assembly premises against what she described as “anti-women opposition parties”.

“India will not tolerate the insult to Nari Shakti,” Gupta said, adding that the opposition, “drowned in the greed for power”, had “once again snatched away women’s rights”.

Earlier in the day, Gupta led BJP legislators in a protest within the Assembly premises, demanding implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam during a one-day special session convened to discuss women’s reservation.

Referring to the legislation brought by the Centre, she said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had introduced the “historic Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam” to ensure 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, received 298 votes in favour and 230 against in the Lok Sabha, falling short of the required two-thirds majority.

Gupta asserted that the BJP remains committed to implementing the quota and safeguarding women’s political rights. “Those who obstruct the path of women’s power will be answered by the people,” she said, adding that “the country’s Nari Shakti will teach them a lesson in the times to come”.

The Assembly also took up a government resolution backing the implementation of the women’s reservation law.
