The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday upgraded its earlier orange alert to a red alert for Mumbai, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the city and adjoining districts.
As per the latest IMD nowcast, Mumbai city, Thane and Raigad in Maharashtra are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall till 11.15 am.
“Intense to very intense spells of rain & thunderstorm accompanied with lightning with gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph very likely in Mumbai city, Mumbai suburban, Thane and Raigad,” the IMD Mumbai said in its nowcast.
An orange alert has also been issued for Pune, Ahmednagar, Beed, Palghar and Latur, while a yellow alert remains in place for the rest of Maharashtra.
Earlier on Sunday, moderate to heavy rainfall occurred over coastal Maharashtra with Colaba receiving 88.2 mm rains overnight.
Moderate to heavy rainfall was also received in several other areas in Mumbai, including Bandra 82.0 mm, Byculla 73.0 mm, Tata Power 70.5 mm, Juhu 45.0 mm, Santacruz 36.6 mm, Mahalaxmi 36.5 mm.
Meanwhile, overnight downpour led to traffic disruptions in multiple areas in Mumbai. The Andheri Subway has been closed for traffic due to severe waterlogging.
“Due to one to one-and-a-half feet of rainwater accumulating at Andheri Subway (Andheri West), traffic there has been closed, and the traffic has been diverted via Gokhale Bridge,” the Mumbai Traffic Police posted on X.
