Congress President Rahul Gandhi will on Saturday launch the first phase of election campaign in poll-bound Karnataka, party leaders said.

The Gandhi scion will be offering prayers at the Huligemma Temple, Gavi Siddeshwara Mutt and Khwaja Bande Nawaz Dargah as part of his four-day visit to the southern state ending on February 13.

The Congress chief will be accompanied by Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the duo will address a series of meetings and rallies with various groups of intellectuals, farmers, women and students.

According to reports, the Congress chief finalised his campaigning schedule after meeting with party leaders from the state, including Siddaramaiah, state party unit president G Parameshwara, Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, and senior leaders Veerappa Moily among others.

With Karnataka likely to witness elections in April-May, the political slugfest between the Congress and the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified following a verbal duel between Siddaramaiah and BJP chief Amit Shah.

Siddaramaiah had called the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) “Hindutva extremists”, while Shah had termed his government in Karnataka “anti-Hindu”.

Rahul Gandhi had earlier warned his party leaders from making remarks which are unwarranted and personal.
