Congress President Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at a rally in Ujjain on Monday.

In poll-bound Madhya Pradesh for a two-day visit, the 48-year-old Congress chief took on the Modi government over the Rafale deal, bank defaulters, and problems faced by farmers. He also targeted MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over the Vyapam Scam and the state’s textile industry.

“BJP speaks of Dharma but their Dharma is corruption,” Gandhi said, addressing a massive gathering of supporters at the Dashahra Maidan.

Referring to the Rafale deal, Gandhi said that PM Modi took away jobs from Madhya Pradesh to give Anil Ambani Rs 30,000 crore.

Commenting on the unceremonious removal of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director Alok Verma, Gandhi said that the officer was about to probe the Rafale deal.

“CBI director was going to start investigating the Rafale fighter jet deal. That is why a rattled Narendra Modi removed him in the midnight itself,” the Congress chief said.

Gandhi, who met Army veterans a few days ago, said that the former soldiers told him that the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) still remains unimplemented and that PM Modi is not telling the truth about it.

“The veterans told me that wherever PM Modi goes, he says that OROP is now in force. The truth is that he is lying. OROP has not been implemented,” Gandhi said.

He also said that Farmers do not get the right price for their produce in the markets. “And even if they get, it comes after months. They don’t get bonus or the money from insurance,” Gandhi added.

Slamming CM Chouhan, Gandhi alleged that 50 people were killed in the Vyapam Scam and education system is lying in ruins in the state.

“CM Shivraj Chouhan destroyed textile industry which had the capability to compete with Chinese and Bangladeshi industries. We will reinvigorate the textile industry,” he said.

“In Ujjain, when a poor woman fails to pay her electricity bill which amounted to Rs 1,00,000, government arrests her. On the other hand, when people like Vijay Mallya abscond with Rs 9,000 crore, no action is taken,” Gandhi said.

He also questioned the cleanliness campaign for Shipra River in Ujjain.

“Rs 400 crore was allocated for the river’s cleanliness. Has the river become clean?” he asked.

Earlier today, Gandhi began his tour with a visit to the famed Mahakaleshwar temple at Ujjain where he offered prayers to Lord Shiva. He was accompanied by Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee chief Kamal Nath and Congress leader and poll in-charge Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Gandhi would be speaking at rallies in Ujjain and Indore on the first day and kick-off day 2 with a meeting of senior members of the press at the Indore Radisson Blue Hotel.

He would then visit Dhar, Khargosh and Mau before returning to the national capital. At Mau, he is scheduled to pay floral tributes at BR Ambedkar’s statue around and address a gathering before leaving for New Delhi.
