Congress president Rahul Gandhi attacked the government on Thursday over its proposed changes to the Right to Information (RTI) Act, saying it would be a “useless Act” after  the changes.

“The changes proposed to the RTI will make it a useless Act,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Asserting that every Indian has the right to know the truth, the Congress president said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should be opposed by every citizen of the country.

Continuing his tirade against the ruling government, he said the BJP believed truth must be hidden from the people and that they must not question people in power.

Gandhi also attached a letter by the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information, which has accused the government of trying to weaken the RTI Act. The letter said the rationale put forth by the government to amend the RTI Act was “completely fallacious”.

According to a PTI report, the proposed amendments circulated among MPs seek to do away with the parity given to information commissions with the Election Commission in terms of salary, allowances and conditions of service, RTI activists have said.

The government had said on Wednesday it was considering a proposal to amend the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, to frame rules on salaries and services of the chief information commissioner and information commissioners.

However, leaders of various political parties opposed the move saying they have committed to fight any “attempt” by the Centre to “dilute” the act and oppose any amendments to it.
