Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday conveyed his greetings to the people of Sikkim on the occasion of the state’s Statehood Day, describing the Himalayan state as a symbol of harmony, resilience and cultural richness.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Gandhi said, “Best wishes to the people of Sikkim on their Statehood Day.”
Praising the state’s natural beauty and traditions, he said, “Blessed with abundant natural beauty, a rich cultural heritage, and vibrant traditions, Sikkim stands as a shining example of harmony and resilience.”
The Congress leader also wished continued prosperity for the state and its people, adding, “May the state continue to flourish and thrive.”
The message came as Sikkim marked the 50th anniversary of becoming a part of the Indian Union, with celebrations taking place across the state through official events, cultural performances and public programmes commemorating its historical journey and development.
Sikkim became India’s 22nd state on May 16, 1975, after a referendum ended the monarchy and paved the way for the former Himalayan kingdom’s merger with India. Over the past five decades, the state has gained recognition for its environmental conservation efforts, organic farming initiatives and sustainable tourism practices.
Bordering China, Nepal and Bhutan, Sikkim occupies a strategically important position in India’s northeast and is widely known for its diverse cultural traditions and ecological wealth.
Leaders from different political parties have extended greetings to the people of the state during the golden jubilee celebrations, acknowledging Sikkim’s contribution to the country’s cultural and developmental landscape.
