The Bihar government’s decision to shift Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Rabri Devi, from 10, Circular Road to a new official residence on Harding Road has set off political ripples in Patna.

While the administration maintains the move is procedural, observers say the symbolism is hard to miss.

What the new bungalow offers

The newly allotted residence at 39, Harding Road is among the larger ministerial accommodations in the city, once occupied by Vinod Narayan Jha, Ramsurat Rai, Samim Akhtar, and Chandramohan Rai. The two-storeyed house includes six sizeable bedrooms, drawing and dining rooms, a hall, a separate office unit, staff quarters, and guard rooms.

The garden is one of the property’s defining features, lined with amaltas, ashoka, neem, peepal, gulmohar, mango, jamun, and oleander trees, alongside dahlias, jasmine, mogra, and marigolds. There is also a provision for a kitchen garden.

Even with this expanse, former occupants note that the bungalow comfortably suits a regular political family, but may feel inadequate for Rabri Devi’s larger household, which includes her nine children and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Why the RJD sees politics behind the shift

The order asking Rabri Devi to vacate the home she has occupied for years triggered an immediate reaction from the party, which termed the move “an act of political vendetta”.

The JD(U), however, insists the allocation follows the rulebook.

“This is a prescribed procedure. The Central Government allocates residences according to position. For Rabri Devi, a new residence has been allotted,” said JD(U) national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan.

JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar added, “Lalu was trapped in the web of illusions. It led to scams, which resulted in Lalu landing in jail. Now, he is caught in the want of a government bungalow.”

The 1.6 km move and its political meaning

Rabri Devi’s current home sits directly opposite the Chief Minister’s residence, a location that has carried political weight for years. The new bungalow, 1.6 km away, marks a noticeable shift in proximity and perception.

Political experts say this is not merely an administrative relocation. Such a move has not been made in more than two decades, they point out, and is being read as a long-term signal.

Many believe Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is placing clear political distance between himself and the Lalu family, a sign that a return to the RJD fold is unlikely even if ties with the BJP undergo strain in the future.

For Rabri Devi, now the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, the debate extends beyond the size of the bungalow.

The relocation has added another layer to Bihar’s already complex political equations, one measured not just in square footage, but in distance and intent.
