‘Put big ‘swadeshi’ board outside shops, buy Made in India products: Modi’s appeal to citizens amid US tariffs

Amid his government’s renewed push for “Aatmanirbharta” (self-reliance), Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday appealed to the people of the country to prioritise purchasing ‘Made in India’ products during the festive season.

“I appeal to the citizens of our country to prioritise purchasing goods that are Made in India. Whether it’s decorative items or gifts, let us choose products manufactured within our own nation,” Modi said while addressing a gathering in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Encouraging shopkeepers and businessmen to refrain from selling items sourced from other countries, the prime minister urged them to proudly display a big ‘Swadeshi’ board outside their shops.

“I also encourage businesses to refrain from selling items sourced from other countries…Shopkeepers and businessmen should keep a big board outside their establishments, saying they sell ‘swadeshi’ goods,” the PM said.

The PM noted that these small yet impactful steps can play a significant role in driving the country’s progress and prosperity.

His latest remark came amid his government’s renewed call for ‘aatmanirbharta’, particularly after US President Donald Trump’s imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on the country’s imports to the United States.

In response, Modi had stressed the need to make the country self-reliant.

‘Aatmanirbharta’ was also central to his Independence Day 2025 speech. During his address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Modi had said that a self-reliant India is essential to a developed India.

“If someone becomes too dependent on others, the very question of freedom starts to fade… Aatmanirbhar is not limited merely to imports, exports, rupees, pounds, or dollars. Its meaning is far broader. Aatmanirbhar is directly connected to our strength,” the prime minister had said.
