Punjab: Drug trafficker linked to Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang held with 4.7 kg heroin

In an intelligence-based operation amidst the ongoing drive to make Punjab a drug-free state, the Counter Intelligence (CI) Patiala has arrested a drug trafficker and recovered 4.7 kg heroin from his possession, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Tuesday.

The arrested accused has been identified as Vansh Kumar, a resident of village Dalam in Batala.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigation has revealed that Vansh Kumar is closely associated with Dubai-based Amritpal Singh, who is an associate of jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria.

The DGP said further investigation is underway to establish forward and backward linkages in this case to expose the full nexus.

Sharing operation details, AIG CI Patiala Dr Simrat Kaur said that following a reliable input that suspect Vansh Kumar had picked up the heroin consignment from Tarn Taran and was on his way to deliver it to an entity based in Jalandhar, Police teams from CI Patiala intercepted him and recovered heroin consignment from his possession. Police teams have also seized the mobile phone of the arrested accused person, she said.

She said that the probe has revealed that arrested accused Vansh was acting on Amritpal’s directions. The latter already faces three criminal cases, including those under the Arms Act, the NDPS Act, and Section 302 of the IPC, she said, while adding that accused Amritpal has also been declared a proclaimed offender by a local court in one of these cases.

The AIG said that investigations are underway to trace the supply chain, identify the recipients in Jalandhar. More arrests and recoveries are likely in coming days, she added. In this regard, a case FIR No. 54 dated September 30, 2025, has been registered under Sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act at the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) Police Station, Amritsar.
