The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Disciplinary Committee has issued a show-cause notice to former MLA Madan Lal Jalalpur, seeking an explanation over his alleged remarks against the party leadership during a recent interaction with the media.

According to the notice, the committee has directed Jalalpur to submit his response within three days, warning that disciplinary proceedings could be initiated if he fails to explain his position within the stipulated period.

The notice, signed by the Disciplinary Committee Chairman and former Punjab minister Avtar Henry, states that the committee received a complaint from the Punjab Congress regarding Jalalpur’s public statements. It further mentions that a video of his media interaction was also examined, in which he allegedly made objectionable remarks against K. C. Venugopal and Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel.

The disciplinary committee said the alleged comments had created resentment among party office-bearers and workers. It asked Jalalpur to clarify why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for conduct considered detrimental to the party’s organisational discipline.

The notice comes just days after Jalalpur visited the residence of former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi in Morinda. During his interaction with the media, Jalalpur had urged the Congress leadership to heed the sentiments of party workers and consider giving Channi a larger leadership role in Punjab.

Jalalpur had also claimed that if the party leadership ignored the views of its cadre, the Congress could perform even worse than it did in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. He further asserted that leaders from various communities, including Jats and OBCs, wanted Channi, a prominent Dalit leader, to lead the party in the state.

The development comes against the backdrop of repeated assertions by Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring that the party would take strict action against anyone found violating organisational discipline or undermining the party’s leadership.
