Chaos erupted on the Lucknow University campus on Wednesday during the visit of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who was in the city to mark the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Students affiliated with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Indian Youth Congress raised slogans and chanted “Mohan Bhagwat, Go Back” outside the venue.

According to reports, Bhagwat had arrived at the university as part of the RSS centenary programme. Even before his arrival, student organisations affiliated with the NSUI and other opposition groups, including the Indian National Congress, had begun protesting on the campus.

Heated altercations broke out between protesting students and the police. Some protesters attempted to cross police barricades, prompting the police to intervene and detain several students. A heavy police presence was deployed across the campus and surrounding areas to maintain law and order.

Police officials said the situation was quickly brought under control and the programme concluded as scheduled. The protesting students said they were opposing the RSS chief’s visit to the university campus and were also demonstrating against issues related to UGC regulations.

Following the incident, tension prevailed on the campus for some time, but the situation later returned to normal.
