Congress General Secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has strongly criticized the Central government’s response to the recent landslide disaster in Kerala’s Wayanad district. The Centre sanctioned Rs 260 crore, a mere fraction of the Rs 2,221 crore requested by the state government to support relief and reconstruction efforts.
“The people of Wayanad faced a devastating tragedy that demanded compassion, fairness, and urgent relief… What they received instead is neglect. Relief and rehabilitation must rise above politics. Human suffering cannot be treated as a political opportunity, and the people of Wayanad deserve nothing less than justice, support, and dignity,” Priyanka Gandhi said in a post on X.
The landslide in Wayanad has caused immense destruction, with hundreds of lives lost and thousands rendered homeless.
The state government had initially sought Rs 2,262 crore based on preliminary assessments, which was later revised to R’s 2,221 crore. However, the Centre’s sanctioned amount falls short of the actual requirement, sparking criticism from the state government and opposition leaders.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed concern over the delay in disbursement, stating that the sanctioned amount has not been received yet.
The state government has also reiterated its demand for the Wayanad landslide to be declared a national disaster and for loan waivers for survivors. Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks highlight the growing demand for accountability and support for the affected people.
