Experts, espousing the cause of women’s rights activists on Thursday, emphasised the importance of pre-marital communication for strengthening the foundation of marriage. They observed that in today’s challenging social context, the age-old sacred institution of marriage is increasingly under strain over minor issues.
They highlighted that young couples should engage in open communication, understand each other’s expectations, and cultivate mutual respect and empathy before entering into marriage.
They stressed the pre-marital communication link and sharing of opinion during the inauguration of a Pre-Marital Communication Centre (PMCC) in Bhubaneswar, under the mentorship of the National Commission for Women (NCW).
In today’s fast-changing social environment, couples often face challenges due to unspoken expectations, lack of communication, or misaligned values, they said.
The launch of the PMCC was organised under the guidance of Ranjan Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, People’s Cultural Centre (PECUC).
Urmila Mahapatra, Prativa Satapathy, and Mukta Sahu, Members of the Odisha State Commission for Women; Madhumita Das, Clinical Psychologist and Secretary General, Indian Council of Child Welfare, Anuradha Biswal, Olympian, Anuradha Mohanty, Executive Director, PECUC; and Ratna Dash, Board Member, PECUC graced the occasion.
This centre is part of the National Commission for Women’s (NCW) initiative to establish Pre-Marital Communication Centres (PMCCs) across the country, to strengthen the foundation of marriage through structured communication, awareness, and counselling.
The newly inaugurated PMCC will provide a safe, inclusive, and professional environment for individuals and couples preparing for marriage.
The centre will offer sessions on emotional compatibility, effective communication, shared responsibilities, gender sensitisation, legal awareness, and conflict resolution. These services will be facilitated by trained counsellors, psychologists, and legal experts to promote healthy, respectful, and equitable partnerships.
