Fresh political speculation over the future of the Samajwadi Party intensified on Thursday after Uttar Pradesh minister and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party chief Om Prakash Rajbhar asserted that a split within the opposition party was inevitable.

Rajbhar claimed that a section of dissatisfied Samajwadi Party MPs was preparing to rebel and suggested that party president Akhilesh Yadav should focus on keeping his lawmakers united instead of engaging in what he described as social media-driven politics.

In a post on X, Rajbhar hinted that the proposed breakaway group would be led by a prominent figure from Ballia district.

The SBSP leader linked the alleged discontent to events at a recent Samajwadi Party programme. According to him, sentiments among some leaders had been hurt following what he described as an insult to Brahmins during a conference held at the party office.

“The plan was already in place, but yesterday’s incident has poured ghee into the fire. The split is definitely going to happen,” Rajbhar said.

Rajbhar advises Akhilesh to reach out to MPs

The minister also took aim at Akhilesh Yadav and members of the Yadav family, saying their response to his recent remarks reflected misplaced priorities.

“The way the entire Saifai family jumped into abusing me and issuing clarifications over one of my reactions—it’s far better for Akhilesh Babu to drop this Twitter, such-and-such, and PC-style leadership, and instead launch a ‘Save Our MPs’ campaign,” Rajbhar said.

He further advised the Samajwadi Party chief to personally meet lawmakers who may be unhappy within the party.

“And go to the homes of the upset and disappointed MPs to apologise to them,” he added.

Remarks fuel political speculation ahead of 2027 polls

Rajbhar’s comments come a day after he claimed that significant political developments were underway in Uttar Pradesh as parties prepare for the 2027 Assembly elections.

He had suggested that political loyalties often shift based on personal interests and hinted that attempts were being made to influence leaders within opposition ranks.

“Only when someone is ready to be bought, will people buy them. Don’t keep your attention only on Maharashtra; it is UP’s number now,” Rajbhar had said.

His remarks have added to speculation over possible turbulence within the Samajwadi Party, particularly after some BJP leaders claimed that several SP MPs were prepared to switch sides.

The opposition party has rejected those assertions. Akhilesh Yadav and other SP leaders have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and accused the ruling alliance of attempting to divert attention from issues confronting the state government.

The latest exchange comes amid wider discussions in political circles about possible realignments involving opposition parties in different parts of the country.
