Stabbing at Sydney church a ‘terrorist act’: Australian police
Australian police are treating a stabbing at a Sydney church as a terrorist attack, New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb said on Tuesday.
Highlighting the “serious trust deficit” between the public and police, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday said police officers should be seen “more with the people” and maintain a “safe distance” from politicians.
Addressing young IPS officers at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad, Telangana, Naidu said police must be a friend of the people.
“There is a serious trust deficit between the public and the police and they are seen as the last option by the people. People and the police need to come together in an environment of mutual trust and confidence. Police must be a friend of the people,” he said.

“Police officers should maintain a safe distance from politicians and be seen more with the people. People should not go to a politician before they decide to come to police station,” Naidu added.
Naidu further said police must address crimes against women and children with “heavy hand” and with “utmost sensitivity” towards the victims.
“Acquire soft skills like effective listening, empathy, team building and stress management,” he said.
“Young police officers need to be equipped with the means and ways of enhancing the legitimacy of policing and strategic thinking as core principles,” he added.
