Beleaguered diamond czar Nirav Modi on Wednesday refused to join the CBI probe in the Rs.12,600 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case against him and his uncle Mehul Choksi.

In an e-mail sent to Modi’s official account, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) asked him to join the probe as it was of paramount importance.

Replying in negative, Modi said he had to take care of businesses abroad so cannot join the investigation.

In reply, the CBI again wrote a mail to Modi asking him to contact the High Commission of the concerned country so that the investigative agency could arrange his travel.

Furthermore, the CBI directed him to join investigation by next week.

Modi, his uncle and Gitanjali Gems promoter Choksi and others are being investigated by multiple probe agencies after a complaint by the PNB that they cheated the bank to the tune of Rs.11,400 crore.

The PNB later revised the figure and said the scam has swelled to over Rs.12,600 crore.

The CBI had filed the first FIR in the scam on February 14 against Modi, his wife Ami, brother Nishal, uncle Choksi and his firms Diamond R US, Solar Exports and Stellar Diamond.

Modi, his family and Choksi left the country in early January. The FIR mentions fraud of around Rs 6,400 crore.

The CBI filed a second FIR on February 15 for Rs 4,886.72 crore fraud against the Gitanjali Group headed by Choksi.

The agency has till date arrested 12 persons in the case.
