Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s sister, Basanti Ben, and brother-in-law Hansmukh Lal returned from their nearly a fortnight-long visit to Uttarakhand on Friday. According to local administration officials the elderly couple arrived in Uttarakhand on November 8 on the eve of the prime minister’s visit for the November 9 silver jubilee celebration in Dehradun, keeping their trip completely a private affair.

Basanti Ben and Hansmukh Lal came to Haridwar for the 14-day spiritual trip to the state and spent most of their time visiting temples and ashrams and meeting spiritual leaders in Haridwar and Rishikesh. Both had made it clear on the very first day that they were on a pilgrimage to the Himalayan state. They had categorically stated that their trip had nothing to do with politics. They just wanted to spend time visiting temples and monasteries and take part in religious functions in Haridwar and in Rishikesh and Haridwar.

During their stay in Rishikesh, Hasmukh Lal conducted jalabhishek (offering Ganga Water) at the renowned Neelkanth Shiva Temple. They spend some time at Tehri Lake. Interestingly, the couple maintained complete distance from the media and political class during the trip.

What’s of significance is that the prime minister’s family members are ardent visitors of religious sites in Uttarakhand. His brothers have been coming to Badrinath and Kedarnath frequently for several years.

According to the information shared by the Rushikesh Police and local administrative officials on condition of anonymity on their last day of their trip to Uttarakhand, the couple was welcomed by Narendra Modi Vichar Manch Uttarakhand in a small function organised at Rishikesh to see them off.
