Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress general secretary for eastern Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said that she was “surprised that the PM visited the whole world but not his own people”.

Priyanka while addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad in her campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, said the people of Varanasi told her that PM Modi never visits the villages around his parliamentary constituency.

“I asked people if PM visits villages in Varanasi, I got the reply ‘he does not visit’. I was surprised because his publicity is such that I thought he must have been doing something. He visited the whole world and hugged everyone, but didn’t hug his own people,” she said.

“He went to America, Japan, China, the entire world. But he didn’t have the time to meet his own constituents. He has done nothing for the people in his own constituency, let alone the people across the rest of the country. It is no small thing, it is a big issue. It shows this government’s intention. It is focused on making the rich richer but not helping the poor,” she was quoted as saying by NDTV.

She further called the BJP government “anti-people and anti-farmer”.

Earlier on Wednesday, giving fresh fodder to rumours on her contesting the Lok Sabha polls, Priyanka had said that she will contest the elections if her party asks her.

“If my party asks me to contest the polls, I will definitely do so. But my personal wish is to work for the party’s organisation as a lot of work needs to be done,” the Congress leader told reporters in Amethi.

Speaking while campaigning for the upcoming General Election in Amethi, Priyanka asked her party workers to prepare for the UP assembly polls that are scheduled to be held in 2022.
