Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil a 64-feet-tall statue of peasant leader Sir Chhotu Ram and lay the foundation stone for a rail coach factory on his visit to Haryana on Tuesday, 9 October.

The statue of Sir Chhotu Ram, who was a champion of peasants of pre-Independence India, will be unveiled at latter’s native village in Sampla in Haryana’s Rohtak district.

Born to Chaudhari Sukhiram Singh Ohlyan and Sarla Devi on 24 November 1881, Sir Chhotu Ram eventually became one of the most prominent politicians in British India’s Punjab Province.

He was instrumental in the introduction of agrarian laws such as Punjab Relief Indebtedness Act of 1934 and the Punjab Debtor’s Protection Act of 1936.

A member of the Jat community, Sir Chhotu Ram was knighted in 1937. He later became the co-founder of the National Unionist Party. Sir Chhotu Ram passed away on 9 January 1945 in Lahore.

After visiting the site of the statue on Sunday, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar told reporters that the contributions of Sir Chhotu Ram to society cannot be forgotten.

“He is an inspiration for our future generations. Later in the day, the PM will address a public meeting, ‘Deenbandhu Smriti Rally’ here,” Khattar said.

Haryana Minister of State for Health and Engineering, Banwari Lal, who accompanied the CM during the site visit, said, “Renowned sculptor and Padma Bhushan recipient Ram Vanji Sutar has sculpted the 64-feet-tall statue. As many as 5,500 farmers from the state donated from half kg to two kg iron for construction of the statue.”

“The unveiling of Sir Chhotu Ram’s statue is an honour for all the farmers in the country. On the occasion, the prime minister will visit the museum based on Sir Chhotu Ram’s life, where scenes recreated from his life and items belonging to the farmer leader would be put on display,” Banwari Lal said.

Union Ministers Birender Singh, who is grandson of Sir Chottu Ram, Piyush Goyal, Krishan Pal Gurjar and Congress MP from Rohtak Deepender Singh Hooda are expected to be present during the unveiling ceremony.

The foundation stone for the rail coach refurbishing and rehabilitation factory will be laid by the PM in Barhi, Sonipat.

CM Khattar and Governors of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu-Kashmir will be present at the events.
