Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a significant two-day visit to West Bengal and Assam starting December 20, emphasizing regional connectivity and industrial growth. The trip includes inaugurating a modern airport terminal and a Rs 10,600 crore fertilizer project.
The schedule begins on Saturday in Ranaghat, West Bengal, with the inauguration and foundation laying for National Highway projects worth Rs 3,200 crore. A key milestone is the opening of a 66.7 km, four-lane stretch of NH-34, which will cut travel time by nearly two hours, improve trade routes to neighboring countries, and boost tourism.
Modi will also lay the foundation for a 17.6 km highway section in North 24 Parganas.
In the afternoon, PM Modi will shift to Guwahati, Assam, to inaugurate the new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport. Spanning 1.4 lakh square meters, the terminal is India’s first nature-themed airport, featuring local bamboo designs, a “Sky Forest” of indigenous plants, and advanced digital travel technologies capable of handling 13 million passengers annually.
On December 21, the Prime Minister will pay tribute to Assam Movement martyrs at Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati before performing the Bhoomi Pujan for a brownfield Ammonia-Urea Fertilizer Project in Namrup, Dibrugarh. This Rs 10,600 crore investment aims to eliminate fertilizer shortages, reduce import dependence, create jobs, and revitalize the region’s industrial base under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The visit highlights the government’s Act East policy by combining infrastructure development with cultural respect and regional self-reliance.
