Uddhav Thackeray is not on Twitter, yet the high and mighty of the country’s political acropolis poured warm birthday greetings for the Shiv Sena chief on the social networking site.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi was among those who wished Thackeray on his birthday on Friday sparking political speculations in Maharashtra and beyond.

“Best wishes to Shri Uddhav Thackerayji, on his birthday. I wish him good health and happiness always,” Gandhi said in his tweet.

This is perhaps for first time that Gandhi has publicly greeted Thackeray on his birthday. It comes amidst signals of a shift in political dynamics in Maharashtra where Shiv Sena, a traditional Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ally, has been displaying clear discomfort with the bigger saffron party.

At the time of writing, Gandhi’s tweet had garnered 7.6K likes and had been retweeted over 1.7K times. But the 48-year-old Congress chief was not the first to wish Thackeray, who turned 58 today.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was the first among the top Indian political leaders to wish Thackeray.

In her tweet she wished “Uddhav Thackerayji a very happy birthday”. Banerjee, who is trying to stitch together various anti-BJP parties into a grand alliance before 2019 Lok Sabha elections, had met the Sena chief in 2017.

Among the BJP leadership, greetings came from both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

“Birthday wishes to Shri Uddhav Thackeray. May Almighty bless him with a long and healthy life in service of society,” wrote the PM.

Fadnavis wrote, “Best wishes to Shiv Sena President Uddhavji Thackeray on his birthday.”

Thackeray has been unsparing in his criticism of both the PM and the CM. In a recent interview published in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamna’, Thackeray had attacked the ruling party in the Centre and the state over a host of issues ranging from cow to corruption.

On 27 July, a day before Thackeray’s birthday, the Shiv Sena launched ‘Chalo Ayodhya Chalo Varanasi’ campaign. According to reports, Thackeray will visit Ayodhya and Varanasi. He will address a rally, participate in Ganga aarti and offer prayers at Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
