Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday expressed deep sorrow over the passing of five-time MLA and former Nagaland minister Imkong L Imchen, describing him as a stalwart who dedicated his life to the welfare of tribal communities.

Imchen, a prominent BJP leader in the Northeast, died on Tuesday at the age of 75 after a brief illness.

In a heartfelt tribute posted on social media, PM Modi said, “Shri Imkong L. Imchen Ji will be remembered for his outstanding contribution to Nagaland’s development. He had been active in public life for several years and was particularly passionate about the welfare of tribal communities. His legislative and ministerial tenures will be fondly remembered. He also contributed towards strengthening the BJP in Nagaland. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this sad hour.”

A native of the Mokokchung district, Imchen began his political career as an Independent MLA in 2003 and later joined the Naga People’s Front (NPF) before aligning with the BJP ahead of the 2023 assembly elections. He served multiple terms in the state cabinet, holding portfolios such as rural development, health, power, education, and home affairs. At the time of his death, he was the advisor for Information & Public Relations and Soil & Water Conservation in the Nagaland government.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla hailed him as “a dedicated leader who served the people with commitment and integrity”, while Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio recalled their close friendship, noting Imchen’s warmth, humour, and unwavering principles. Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton called him a “pillar of the BJP Nagaland family” whose humility and perseverance left a lasting legacy.

Imchen’s funeral was held today, with a state ceremony streamed live for the public. His body was later taken to his native village for traditional rites. He is survived by his wife, four sons, two daughters, and 13 grandchildren.
